Tina Sani

Khari Neem Ke Neechay is a Folk Song In Dhatki Language that is Spoken In Sindh. It was brought to mainstream by Mai Bhagi, one of the most authentic Sindhi voices.

Later Tina Sani perfected this beautiful folk track, which can be downloaded below, with lyrics in voice of both legends:

Khari Neem Ke Neechay – Mai Bhagi

Khari Neem Ke Neechay – Tina Sani

Allama Iqbal Sketch

Allama Iqbal Sketch

Dear Brother W,

Allama Iqbal’s Javid Nama is full of wisdom and insight. He knew both the East and the West, and in my opinion, his message is still relevant, and may help bring East and West closer together in mutual understanding.

I first heard Allama Iqbal’s words before I read them, in the voice of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who sang “Dayar-e-Ishq Mein Apna Maqam Paida Kar” – that I bought in 1987, sung live in Paris. I sent you the digitised version of thi album last year. “Dayar-e-Ishq Mein…” also is part of the Javid Nama, and its message is profoundly moving. Apparently, Nusrat Sahib’s father and uncle, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, were the first qawwals to sing Allama Iqbal’s poems.

Khayaban-e-Anne-Marie Schimmel (Lahore, Pakistan)

Khayaban-e-Anne-Marie Schimmel (Lahore, Pakistan)

In 1990 I bought an academic Dutch translation of a book on Allama Iqbal by the great scholar Annemarie Schimmel (1922-2003), who greatly admired Allama Iqbal. In that book I read poems that had first reached me in the form of qawwali, and I remember thinking that it’s wonderful to read poems in words, but hearing them sung is what truly brings them to life. I am immensely grateful for both the written poetry and the sung poetry.

Yours affectionately,

Wazir

The Night of Reunion: Mevlana Rumi’s last verses

Mevlana Rumi last resting place in Konya

When Maulana Rumi’ final hours arrived, his family and friends gathered at his deathbed. Rumi asked for basin of water which he rubbed on his forehead and chest as his fever increased.

Some minstrels also arrived and sang below verses from Rumi’s Masnavi (Quatrain No. 1533) , which tells about the bitterness of separation from loved one.

My heart holds suspicion toward you, when far away from you,
It is because of its weakness, when it is far away from you.
There is bitterness in the mouth of every bitter-hearted person;
Even sweetness resents against you, when far away from you.

When Rumi’s son Sultan Walad and other relatives heard this and thought of Mevlana leaving then, they begin to weep.

Rumi replied, “My friends are drawing me to this side, but Hazrat Mawlana Shamsudin [Sham Tabrez] is calling me to the other side.”.

Rumi wanted to tell that his seperation from them is actually union with his Creator and also beloved Shams Tabrez.

Then he recited the verse from Quran: “Respond to Allah’s summoner and believe in Him” (Quran 46:31).

His son Sultan Walad stood at his death bed all the time and Rumi knew his about fatigue. Rumi asked him to take some rest since he knew that his union with his creator has arrived. Then he said below beautiful verses, which were his last:

I am on the Deathbed; Go, rest your head on a pillow, leave me alone;
leave me ruined, exhausted from the journey of this night,
writhing in a wave of passion till the dawn.
Either stay and be forgiving,
or, if you like, be cruel and leave.
Flee from me, away from trouble;
take the path of safety, far from this danger.
We have crept into this corner of grief,
turning the water wheel with a flow of tears.
While a tyrant with a heart of flint slays,
and no one says, “Prepare to pay the blood money.”
Faith in the king comes easily in lovely times,
but be faithful now and endure, pale lover.
No cure exists for this pain but to die,
So why should I say, “Cure this pain”?
In a dream last night I saw
an ancient one in the garden of love,
beckoning with his hand, saying, “Come here.”
On this path, Love is the emerald,
the beautiful green that wards off dragonsnough, I am losing myself.
If you are a man of learning,
read something classic *
a history of the human struggle
and don’t settle for mediocre verse.

Kulliyat-i-Shams 2039

* a classic book by well known person remains unclear. Per Dar ul Masnavi website, possibly Mevlana means that for scholars, talking is thing to do. But for Sufis seeking union with their Creator, the journey is into great silence that is symbolised by death.

Mevlana Rumi then breathed his last, which was on night of December 17, 1273, or the 5th of the Islamic lunar month, Jumad al-Aakhirah جُمادى الآخرة

His death anniversary is celebrated as Shab Al Uroos, the Night of Reunion with his Creator. It is not a celebration of sorrow, but a day of blessings.

Read pilgrimage to Rumi’s Mausoleum in Konya where Rumi’s Urs is celebrated every year with whirling dervishes ceremony.

Sindhi Sufi Music is deep and not easy to understand, which is something Allan Fakir himself admitted. Although we har fusion music all the time, Allan Fakir tried music fusion decades ago as he collaborated with M.A.Shehki, blending Sindhi Folk and Pakistani Urdu Pop music.
Allan Fakir truly lived a lived of a fakeer. Although Govt. did assigned him a petty job at a national bank, his heart remained living a life of nomad, playing music in jungles and deserts where nobody heard him.

Darvesh Band from Pakistan rose to fame in Pepsi battle of bands with a genre unheard, Qawwali Rock.

And it will be justified to say that no other band fit such genre more beautifully than Darvesh. It was heartwarming to see that two of the eight finalist bands influenced by Sufi Music, the other being Badnaam, the greatest Sufi Rock band since Junoon.

Both Badnaam and Darvesh were bands with a mission, that is to spread meaningful message of love and Sufism via music.

Jee Lay Har Pal by Darvesh Band is a song which is not from their Pepsi performance. It’s a track they performed before their fame at Pepsi show, but a worthy listen. Download

Loved in both Pakistan and India in particular, it is music genre that has massive influence over Bollywood music as well as the overall arts and culture scene of South Asia.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khans ancestors hailed from Jalandhar India but migrated to Layalpoor (Faisalabad now), hence bringing the music influences of both countries.

The Philosophy of Miraj Shareef: Revealed by Dr. Muhammad Allama Iqbal.

The journey of Miraj of Prophet SAW is what Science defines now as ‘time travel’.

Physics have proved that anything travelling at speed of light will bent the fabric of time.

Hence when Prophet returned back on earth after spending significant time viewing Heavens and meeting

Allah, Hazrat Aisha R.A. said that the door chain was still moving as he left and returned. His span of times in other worlds was merely a split second on Earth.

Prophet’s opponents at Makkah ridiculed such claim, a concept unbelievable at that time. However, Hazrat Abu Bakr R.A. and other companions stood by Prophet. At this occasion, Prophet gave Abu Bakr the title of Sadeeq, The Truthful one.

A thousand of years later, the variation of time was confirmed by Einstein. Light (Noor) is the only force that is always constant, which Allah has attributed to him (Allah is Noor of Heavens and Earth).

Dr. Allama Iqbal lived thought the times when theory of space time was revolutionised by Einstein. With his exceptional study of Islam and Sufism as well as an interest in Metaphysics, Allama Iqbal presented the philosophy of Miraj Sharif in below beautiful verses:

sabaq mila hai yeh miraj e mustafa se mujhe

Sabaq Mila Hai Yeh Miraj-e-Mustafa (S.A.W.) Se Mujhe
Ke Aalam-e-Bashriyat Ki Zadd Mein Hai Gardoon

Ye Kainat Abhi Na-Tamaam Hai Shayad
Ke Aa Rahi Hai Dama-dam Sadaay ‘Kun Fayakun’

In Muhammad SAW’s Miraj, I have learned this lesson
That in reach of mankind exist great heavens

This universe perhaps is still incomplete.

Since God’s order to create Universe (Be and it happens) still echoes faraway.

Amazing Naat Rasool-e-Maqbool SAW penned by Hindu Poets

Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad became the Prime Minister of Hyderabad State from 1901–1912 and again from 1926–1937. Hyderabad was then an autonomous state then, famed for its a excellent governance that prioritized well being its citizens

Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad was a popular leader, who was also well versed in Urdu poetry and literature. He was an excellent poet himself also and during his governance Urdu Adab flourished greatly.

Naat Sharif was one of the most beautiful and popular genres in poetry, and Hyderabad Deccan was known for Naat Poets.

Describing the glory of Prophet Muhammad SAW was not only confined to Muslims, but many Hindu and Sikh poets also send their praise in form of Naat Sharif.

Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad was Ashiq-e-Rasool, whose love for Prophet was infinite. His verse below truly depict this:

Woh Ghar Hai Khuda Ka, To Yeh Mehboob e Khuda Hain

Kaabay Se Bhi Aala Na Ho, Kyon Shaan e Mustafa

If Kaaba is house of God, then this is beloved of God we talking

Why won’t the glory of Prophet be greater than Kaaba itself

Below is beautiful selection of Naat Sharif that are penned by some amazing Hindu Urdu poets. As Allama Iqbal expressed his love for Aashiq-e-Rasool himself:

Ki Muhammad Se Wafa Tu Ne to hum teray Hain,

Yeh Jahan cheez hai kya, yeh loh o Qalam teray Hain

Badnaam sings Deh Khudaya – An Anti-Feudal poem by Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Badnaam: Junoon Reborn

Badnaam: Junoon Reborn

‘Deh Khudaya’ is a poem by Allama Iqbal that hints at his stance against feaudalism and capitalism.

Allama in his several poems vocally speak against feaudalism and western style of democracy as he praised some aspects of socialism.

The poem criticizes feudal landlords saying it’s not them that raises seed from the soil, moves the winds, and convert water to cloud.

It is a rebel piece of work that challenges the feudals of India and Pakistan stating that ultimate owner of land is Allah, whose being is eternal. It is His order that wind blows and rains drenches the soils for benefit of mankind, not the order of Feudal.

Such poem is perfect lyrics for a rebel rock band, which is rarity in Pakistan, until Badnaam arrived at the Pepsi Battle of the Bands.

The huglely talented trio of bassists Lala Ahsen, drummer Rahim Shahbaz and their frontman guitarits and vocakist Ahmed Jilani blew away the judges and audiences with a track, which was the most original in the competition.

Allama Iqbal meets Nirvana is best way to describe a band which is hailed by critics as the greatest Pakistani Rock band since Junoon.

King of Qawwali

We are talking about top 10 tracks of The Qawwal who:

  • Composed more than 200 albums despite living a short life.
  • Had an unbelievable vocal frequency that actually flustered the studio recording artists as they had to re-tune their machines to captures his exceptional vocal range.
  • Raised the genre of Qawwali from India and Pakistan to lands as far as Hollywood, Japan and Russia. For the first time, Sufi Music joined the world stage as a proper music genre.

Here is my Top 10, two tracks each from a particular genre:

  • Sufiana Kalam

Nusrat Sahib raised singing of Kalam of Bulleh Shah to an unprecedented level, whether it is Baba Bulleh Shah’s famous Mera Piya Ghar Aya or the amazing Gal Ek Nukte Wich Mukdi Hai.

10. Mann Atkeya Beparwa De Naal – Kalam Shah Hussain (9:30)

9. Mera Piya Ghar Aaya Kalam Baba Bulleh Shah

  • Manqabat

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had great respect for Hazrat Imam Hussain R.A. and Hazrat Ali R.A. , which is evident from his evergreen Qawwali such as Ali Maula Ali Maula Ali Dam Dam, Ali Da Malang etc. Below two remain alltime favourites.

8. Ali Maula Ali Maula Ali Dam Dam (7:44)

7. Dam Mast Qalandar Mast Mast [Original Version]

  • Ghazals

Besides Sufi Music, Nusrat Fateh was equally adept at Ghazals, many of which had Sufiana Rang also. There are 2 such ghazals that still remain as fresh as always:

6. Yeh Jo Halka Halka Saroor [Full Version]

5. Tumhein Dillagi Bhool Jaani Paregi

  • Hamd

Hamd Bariya Taala or Praise of Allah Almighty is a genre of poetry in which Urdu and Punjabi excelled. Nusrat Fateh performed few Hamd Kalam but showed his exceptional versatility in then too.

4. Khudi Ka Sare Nihan, La Ilaha Illalah (18:06) – Kalam of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal

3. Meri Tauba

  • Punjabi Love Songs

Nusrat Sahib performed so many amazing Punjabi Love Songs, but these 2 have legendary status:

2. Sano Ek Pal Chain Naa Aaway [Live Sessions]

1. Mere Rashke-e-Qamar – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan [Original Version]

There is so much to write but I conclude saying that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s untimely death left a vacuum that is hard to fill. There are many qawwal who imitate him however, the genius compositions of Nusrat Sahib is something we still miss as all these artists keep remixing the same tunes again and again that NFAK once composed.

Do not tangle yourself in this trap of Day and Night
Because there are many Spaces and Times for you [beyond this world]

Bulleh Shah Poem [English Translation]

O’ Human Being
These Birds Flying
Do you see what they do?
They don’t store any food with greed
And they don’t die of hunger
Has anyone see flying birds dying of hunger?
It’s greedy Human that store food
It’s Humans that die of hunger.

Punjabi Text

Na O’ Bhuke Marde Ne
